1. Welcome to OL WM 2003 in Rapperswil/Jona
The Organising Committee, the cities of Rapperswil and Jona, the organising orienteering clubs and the Swiss Orienteering Federation are delighted to be the hosts for the 2003 World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland. Rapperswil/Jona are two almost completely merged communities, covering a small area. They represent a romantic old town combined with the pulse of a small city and rural charm. Their attractive location at the lake of Zurich with close proximity to forests and mountains is the ideal venue for the next World Orienteering Championships in continental Europe.
Orienteering in Switzerland offers a variety of European terrains combined in one country. All the elements that make up the fascination of orienteering can be found here. And Switzerland offers an excellent infrastructure, world-famous tourist attrac-tions and a good transportation network.
Rapperswil/Jona is situated about 30 kilometer SE of the International Airport Zurich and can easily be reached by public transportation and by car. We are looking forward to welcome all the friends of orienteering in Rapperswil/Jona in 2003.

5. Classes and entry regulations
The Competition Rules for IOF Foot Orienteering Events (edition of June 1, 2000) include the following rules relating to participation in World Orienteering Championships:
5.7 There is one class for women and one for men. There are no age restrictions.
6.1 A competitor may represent only one Federation during any one calendar year.
6.2 Competitors who are representing a Federation shall have full passport-holding citizenship of the country of that Federation.
6.3 Each participating Federation shall appoint a team manager to act as a contact person between the team and the organiser. It is the team manager’s duty to see that the team receives all necessary information.
6.4 Competitors participate at their own risk. Insurance against accidents shall be the responsibility of their Federation or themselves, according to national regulations.
6.5 All competitors represent a Federation. Each Federation may enter a team of up to 14 competitors – up to 7 women and 7 men – and a number of team officials. The organiser shall fix the maximum number of officials per team, in accordance with the available facilities. This maximum number shall be the same for each team and shall be at least 5.
6.6 In the short distance qualification race, each Federation may enter up to 4 women and 4 men and, in addition, the current short distance World Cham-pions may be entered by their Federation(s). In the final, only the competitors placed number 15 and better in each qualification race heat may participate.
6.7 In the qualification race for the classic distance, each Federation may enter up to 4 women and 4 men and, in addition, the current classic distance World Champions may be entered by their Federation(s). In the classic distance final, only the competitors placed number 30 and better in each qualification race heat may participate.
6.8 In the relay, each Federation may enter one women's team and one men's team, each consisting of 4 team members. Incomplete teams and teams with runners from more than one Federation are not allowed.

6. Training Opportunities

Beginning of 2002 several training packages containing maps and controls will be available. Individual training stages can be arranged in addition. For any information on training please contact:

7. Embargoed Areas
According to the SOLV Competition Roules (article 49) and the IOF Competition Roules (article 26.5), it is prohibited to enter these areas for any potential member of an official WOC 2003 team (heads of delegation, athletes, coaches, medical staff) and others, who – through knowledge of the terrains and the competitions – may influence the results of the WOC 2003 competitions.
Exception: The passage through them is allowed on paved main roads.

Offenses must be reported to the technical director of the organizing committee of OL WM 2003, Hansueli Steinmann, Im Freien 5, CH-8712 Stäfa, Switzerland, hsteinmann@olwm2003.ch.

The following areas, also indicated in the map below, are embargoed until further notice.

One copy of the most recent version of the previous orienteering maps or a Topo map 1 : 25’000 – if there doesn’t exist any previous orienteering map – of the embargoed areas is included with Bulletin 1 sent to each member Federation.



8. Event center and accommodation
The region of Rapperswil/Jona offers a lot of accommodation options, from camping grounds through to four star hotels.
The official event and media center of OL WM 2003 will be the Seedamm Plaza Hotel, one of Switzerlands largest congress centers located 2 km south of Rapperswil/Jona at the Lake of Zurich. All national teams, invited guests and IOF officials will be offered reasonable priced accommodation at Seedamm Plaza Hotel within the closer region of Rapperswil/Jona.
Reservation forms for accommodation will be included in Bulletin 2.

9. Peculiarities of OL WM 2003
Let us keep our sport and the OL WM 2003 free of doping! We, the organisers are fully committed to support the endeavours of the anti-doping authorities with high-est priority. We will also keep the participants, through their member federations, informed about the current developments of the applicable anti-doping laws and regulations in Switzerland.
