> OL WM 2003 > Media > Press Releases > Number 4 365 days to go!Intensive preparations on all levels are on the way while the kickoff to the 20th World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland is exactly 365 days away. The preparations match largely the planning schedule. One year before the start of the WOC 2003 in Rapperswil/Jona a wonderful summer lingers over Switzerland, with the warm water of the lake of Zurich so inviting to bathe...The different terrain that has been used for the Swiss world cup events in June was not very relevant to the terrain to be expected for the world championships next year. Nevertheless, important experience could be gained with timekeeping and the overall information system. The final strategy for the choice and number of radio controls, the information board and video projection walls within the four finish arenas will be decided upon within the next few weeks. Together with the project managers of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation the different locations for the television cameras are determined - exactly one year prior to the WOC. The professional movie producer and former elite orienteer Guido Rhyn composed an attractive videotape on orienteering as a competitive sport. The tape is meant for the media as well as for the schools involved in the "sCOOL" project. It can be ordered at the WOC secretariat. Competitions The entire set of maps for the six WOC areas has already been completed. All courses are set and have been tested only recently. The test runners' statements are encouraging: "Ingenious and excellent. Brutal and extreme. Many surprising changes in the terrain and also in the layout of the courses." Minor revisions might be performed during the next weeks. The final map changes are done only a few weeks before the WOC. Infrastructure The buildings of the college Rapperswil have been selected as the center of the WOC. Located there are the WOC secretariat and the WOC media center. Hence, the core of the 20th WOC is not only within the center of the whole venue, but also in the middle of the terrain of the sprint on August 5, 2003, which is the first day including a final. The finish areas are adjusted according to the needs of the course setting. Multiple passes of competitors have to be taken into consideration as well as the exact positions of the display systems or the anticipated angle of the daylight. The Italian company Microgate has been named as the official timekeeper. Tour O Swiss and Swiss O Week The Tour O Swiss offers an exceptionally attractive pre-WOC program. During the week before the WOC a journey through Switzerland can be combined with the "nicest minor matter of the world". Orienteering at the foot of the Matterhorn is a new kind of feeling, even for the Swiss. The six-day event Swiss O Week will take place as a side event for the spectators in parallel to the WOC. It is currently in the phase of detailed planning. Here too, the collaboration between the many orienteering clubs with some 700 volunteers and the local authorities is according to schedule. The detailed information sheets and application forms for the Tour O Swiss and the Swiss O Week are readily available. They can be ordered at tos@olwm2003.ch and sow@olwm2003.ch, respectively. From September 1, 2002, online application will be possible. The WOC Bulletin no 2 is going to be published in October 2002. Posted: 2003-02-01 15:34:00 |
