Model Event / Training
Model event for the individual races
Location: near the start area of the first individual race.
Date: 6th October 1998
Starting time: 10:00 - 12:00
Terrain: The terrain is truly representative for the individual races, featuring all terrain types except the type described last
for the second individual race.
Map: «Haut du Mollendruz», IOF norms, Scale 1:15'000, contour interval 5m. Surveyed and drawn in June 1998 by Urs Steiner.

Training course for the relay
Date: 5th October - 9th October
Terrain: Being part of the same forest, the terrain is fully representative of the relay terrain.
Map: «Forêt de Fermens Nord», IOF norms, Scale 1:15'000, contour interval 5m. Surveyed and drawn in June 1998 by Urs Steiner and Beat Imhof

First Individual Race

Date: 7th October 1998
Terrain: The terrain is a mix of
open areas (pasture, without trees), of quite good runnability and
forest areas with stony ground and in many parts very detailed contours.
Map: «Communal de L'Abbaye», IOF norms, Scale 1:15'000 contour interval 5m. Surveyed and drawn in June 1998 by Urs Steiner
Type of race: The first part of the race leads the runners from the start to the finish area. From the finish each competitor runs three loops (whereof one short loop in the end), changing his map three times in the finish area.
Qualification: This first individual race is the qualification race for the mens final of 8th October
First start: 09:00
Start intervals: 1 minute for men, 3 minutes for women
Wardrobe: In team tents
Showers: Warm showers in the finish area

Second Individual Race

Date: 8th October
Terrain: There are three distinct types of terrain. One part is closed forest with thick vegetation and partly stony ground. Its relief is coarsely structured. Another part is semi-open with no clear structures and quite good runnability. A third part consists of slopes with plenty of details and closed forest; due to the stony ground runnability is extraordinarily difficult.
Map: «La Dôle», IOF norms, Scale 1:15'000, contour interval 5m. Surveyed and drawn in June 1998 by Beat Imhof, Pierre-Alain Matthey and Urs Steiner.
Type of race: Individual race (classical length)
First start: Men: 9:00
Women: not before 9:30
Starting intervals: Men A- Final : 3 minutes
Men B-Final: 2 minutes
Women: 3 minutes
Wardrobe: In team tents
Showers: Warm showers can be reached by shuttle bus

Relay

Date: 10th October 1998
Terrain: The terrain is not very structured. Forest is closed with varying runnability but a dense path network. Slopes are shallow. The technical difficulties do not match those of the individual races.
Map: «Forêt de Fermens Sud», IOF norms, Scale 1:15'000, contour interval 5m. Surveyed and drawn in June 1998 by Urs Steiner
Type of race: 3 (wo)men relay

Women: 9:15
Wardrobe: In team tents
Showers: Warm showers near the finish area
